Rebrand to be announced after the season finale

MotoGP is set to begin a new era under the ownership of Liberty Media, as the acquisition of a majority stake in promoter Dorna Sports has been submitted for regulatory approval with the European Commission. With the new ownership comes a full rebrand, expected to be announced at the conclusion of the 2024 MotoGP season this weekend. Thanks to trademark submissions submitted in Europe, we now know what the new branding will look like.

The European Union Intellectual Property Office received trademark applications today for new logos for MotoGP, and its support classes Moto2, Moto3, and the electric MotoE series. The owner of the filings remains hidden at the moment, but the legal firm handling the submissions is the same Madrid-based representatives that handles Dorna’s intellectual property filings.

The new logos share a common theme, with a stylized “MOTO” in a dark color with the specific class in a lighter color. As with most trademark filings, the submissions were made in monochrome, so we don’t yet know what the final colors will look like.

The new logos will replace the current designs, which have been in use for quite some time. The familiar checkered flag motif has been in place since 2000, with a tweak in 2007 to change the the color of the last two letters of “MotoGP” from black to red.

The subclasses used the same design for “Moto” but with the class designation inside one of the slanted shapes from the checkered flag motif.

Along with the various class logos, Dorna filed a shortened version of the MotoGP logo with just the “M” and “GP”.

Dorna also filed an alternative logo with a more squared-off lettering design, and “GP” in superscript. Unlike the other designs, this one has a slightly different color for the “M” than the rest of the letters. Given the lack of similar logos for the other classes, plus the potential uses listed in the trademark filing, it’s likely this will be used as a secondary logo, with the curvier designs being the main logos.

We’ll find out more about the MotoGP rebrand, including the new colors, when it is officially announced after the end of the current season.
