My experience with the 6D ATS-1R started at WSBK weekend at Laguna Seca where I bumped into Bob Weber, who I worked with 20 years ago at Petersen Publishing. Full disclosure before we begin: I’m a former Alpinestars employee. But don’t take that to mean I’m a fan of all its products. There are definitely some duds. A perplexing one was the first-generation Missile Tech-Air suit. At a thousand bucks, it was a novel idea as a relatively affordable entry-level airbag-compatible suit. The thing going against it was fit (at least for me) – I didn’t like the fit at all. At 5-foot, 8-inches, 150 pounds, with a 30-inch inseam and 31-inch waist, I’m about as average as they come in regards to body size and type. Still, the Missile was uncomfortable. The proportions were wrong and it was tight in the hips and knees, making it difficult to move my lower body the way I wanted.

Well, the old Shorai LFX battery lasted nine years in my carbureted 2000 Yamaha R1, so if this one does that well, I’ll be happy. When we got the Shorai in 2010, lightweight lithium batteries were a new and exciting technology to fear and loathe, and Shorai was one of the only players. Today, there are many more lithiums on the field, so I did what most people do: I looked for the cheapest lithium battery that didn’t have terrible reviews. 

Most motorcycle manufacturers don’t seem to put much consideration into the design of their turn signals, and many of the ones who do aren’t allowed to use them on their US models; thankfully the aftermarket has both problems covered. Available in a series of designs, aftermarket signals can be sleek for streetfighters, classic for cruisers, or even discreet for sportbikes. Now, with the proliferation of LEDs, signals can be incredibly slim and incredibly bright. All with little draw on the electrical system. Here we’ve collected a small sampling of LED signals for nearly every kind of motorcycle.

As I’ve progressed my way through this 790 Duke project, I’ve mostly concentrated on parts that improve the KTM’s function or provide some sort of protection. Since I’m typically a function over form kinda guy, this is to be expected. However, there are some features of the Duke that, despite their utility, I thought needed replacing. For example, the stock mirrors, while performing their intended job quite well, broke up the angular lines of the bike and looked like rubber flippers mounted on the handlebar. The allure of off-road riding for many is simply the ability to go further. To explore the unknown. To get as far as possible from our daily grind and the hustle and bustle of life. But to get out there, and more importantly to be able to get back, it’s not often an OEM fuel tank is going to deliver the kind of range we moto-Magellans are looking for. KTM released the 790 Duke as a 2019 model in the U.S., but it was available to much of the rest of the world for a year longer. In that time, reports of shifting issues have circulated among Duke owners. While some riders report false neutrals between the higher gears, others have said that, although the quickshifter cuts the ignition, the shift occasionally doesn’t happen. Factory Pro has seen this before, calling the issue lazy shifting, and has created a kit to almost completely resolve the matter on a wide variety of motorcycles, including the 790 Duke. However, to understand what makes this kit special, we first need to discuss how a motorcycle changes gears. 

While there’s something to be said about the convenience and cost-effectiveness of being able to toss a set of soft luggage on your motorcycle when you need it, the time comes when you realize that what you really need is a set of hard bags. Since they are bolted or locked to your motorcycle, they are significantly more secure from theft. Then there’s the weatherproofness that can’t be matched by soft luggage. When we were given the opportunity to test the new INNOVV K2 Motorcycle Camera System, I immediately thought of my friend. Hey, don’t look at me; I learn to do everything on YouTube! Matter of fact, I just got the AC at Casa JB up and running on the first 95-degree day of the year, thanks to a new $18 relay I learned how to replace on YT! Yaaaaay! On the other hand, I had to wade through a bunch of vidiots before I got to the good information, and there’s the rub. Even with all the new wonderbikes, the skills and mindset one needs to properly operate a motorcycle in a self-preserving fashion haven’t changed since the print era, and these books are the gold standard. Also, I think you internalize things when you’re relaxed in your comfy reading spot much better than you do on your iPhone bouncing along in back of an Uber, no? Not that you can’t Kindle or tablet some of these up if you must. Away we go.

Yes, that’s right, you get two pairs of boots when you purchase the Alpinestars Supertech R boots. There’s a catch, though. You have to wear both pairs of boots at once. Well, I suppose you could walk around your house in the inner booties so that your family can mock you, like mine did, when I first tried on the Supertechs, but really, the inner booties are a secret best kept between you and the outer Supertech boot. In case you’re wondering why two sets of boots, I’ll tell ya, and once you consider it, the idea makes a lot of sense. Finding boots that are specific to a riding style is easy, regardless of whether you’re a trail rider on a big GS or a sportbike rider clipping apexes on the Panigale V4. That said, once you get into more casual boots, things can get murky. Enter the Icon 1000 Truant 2 – a casual boot/moccasin/high top sneaker hybrid that (at least on paper) ticks a lot of boxes. For many (myself included), there’s value in a pair of boots that don’t look like conventional riding boots, especially for those days where you’re out running errands. The challenge is that most brands are so ride-focused that they don’t always consider walking/standing comfort, and a quick skim of user reviews will tell you that not all of the big gear brands have figured out what it takes to play in the category.

If you ride motorcycles long enough, inevitably you’re going to want to go on a motorcycle trip. And when you decide to go on a trip, you’re going to need stuff. The challenge becomes finding a place to store all that stuff. Behold – soft luggage. Granted, most of you know the definition of soft luggage, but if not, each bag here has some kind of textile exterior and is not constructed from a hard-shell plastic or metal. All are at least water resistant, and only one is motorcycle-specific.

Twenty-five hundred miles in seven days, through blinding torrential rains and face melting sun, through the darkest of darks along the loneliest of highways, rapidly weaving through endless reserves of the greenest of lush, the relaxing view through my race helmet was ever changing, never to be repeated twice. From LA to British Columbia and back, this epic journey amongst friends was one for the ages. Food for the ever hungry soul, if you will.

While they may be called helmet communicators, I bet that most riders spend the majority of their time listening to music rather than talking with other riders. Because of that, the most common complaint we hear about these Bluetooth systems is that the speakers have tinny sound and lack the volume to be heard clearly at speed – particularly when wearing earplugs. Well, Cardo has heard you and responded with the recently released 45mm Audio Set, which consists of a pair of 45mm JBL-developed helmet speakers and the firmware to allow select Cardo units to get the most out of them. 

When it comes to any kind of riding gear, comfort is key. This is especially true when it comes to gloves. Since your hands are pretty darn important to riding, if a glove doesn’t fit well, it doesn’t matter what sort of advanced materials or techno-farkles it has. It’ll just sit on the shelf, anyway. Now, there are plenty of comfortable gloves out there, but as far as race gloves go, I’ve never worn a pair that were instantly as comfortable as the High Racer Glove from Racer. Forget the old baseball analogy, now when I hear “it fits like a glove,” the High Racer is what I’m talking about.

We all know that the world shown in motorcycle advertisements isn’t real. As much as we’d like it, the sun doesn’t always shine, and we aren’t the only vehicle on the road. We can always dream, though. When it comes to bad weather, we all have to deal with it sometime – even those of us who reside in sunny SoCal. When the rain starts to fall, the best thing we can do is have proper rain gear to keep us dry. Touring and adventure touring riders will often make their stand against the elements with waterproof riding suits, which we’ve covered here.  For the rest of us, a rain suit over our regular riding gear gets carried along when the weather looks like it could turn wet. 

Most, but not all, motorcycle luggage these days is waterproof or comes with a cover or something similar to make them so. Using waterproof luggage guarantees your belongings will stay dry and, in general, better protected from the outside elements. When touring, this is more or less a crucial requirement because the weather can change in an instance. Even for daily use, it’s good to know your belongings will stay dry in the event of a surprise Spring shower on your way to work.

Why introduce a new street tire to the motorcycle press on a race track? It’s a fair question with a relatively simple answer. Sporting rubber – even that designed for the street – has evolved so much in the past decade that exploring their limits can only be safely approached in a closed course environment. The designers clearly felt this way about the Bridgestone Battlax Hypersport S22 tire when they flew journos from around the world to the legendary Circuito de Jerez in Spain to see what this new rubber was capable of doing. That was their story at least, and we’re down with it.

At first sight, I wasn’t overly stoked about the look of the REV’IT! Prometheus jacket. It was just a little too simple. My wife, however, was plenty stoked. The folks at REV’IT! had offered it as an alternative to a jacket which is being discontinued and I agreed to give it a try. Once I received it, I was much happier with it and my wife who works in the fashion industry gave me the old, “I told you so”. That happens more often than I’d like to admit – with style, anyway.

About the time I received the Spidi Carbo Rider jacket, the Spidi Carbo 4 glove arrived with it and boy, do they look good together. A match made in Ukraine and China respectively (with both designed in Italy, of course). Ya know, I’ve noticed that glove preference can be quite polarizing. Some folks swear by gauntlet gloves, for daily wear or in inclement weather, they pull those gauntlets on with pride to show their superiority over short cuff glove wearing fools everywhere. Others can’t really stand gauntlets, which until more recently, was my MO (hehe, see what I did there). Of course, I would wear them at the racetrack, but just about any other time, I preferred short cuff gloves. I’ve tried all sorts of weather resistant gloves too; Gore-Tex, short, long, etc. Some have done their job and some haven’t despite being gauntlet or short-cuffed. Around town, you’ll usually see me in short-cuffed mits. The Spidi Carbo 4 is the first gauntlet glove I’ve liked enough to use without a race suit on. 

There are leather motorcycle jackets, and then there are leather sport riding jackets. Leather jackets designed for sport riding are typically going to fit more snug in order to better keep their armor in place and allow for a more aerodynamic profile overall. Depending on the level of sport jacket you’re considering, it may also include more abrasion resistant materials like leather with special treatments or plastic impact sliders. The Spidi Carbo Rider is an excellent example of an aggressive sport jacket that can be worn for daily use.
