Revzilla Open-Box and Blemished Merch Bargains

My wife called it “the dinge binge,” the rack at the back corner of the store where the day-old bakery stuff’s a buck, and slightly dented cans are half-off. Yo, we’re not going to eat the can anyway. Botu-what? You know you’re going to drop and/or scratch that new helmet eventually. It’s traditional to roll on the ground in new leathers to ward off bad luck. Why not nip evil in the bud by saving a bundle on these pre-distressed items? These four items only scratch the surface.

MO Tested: 6D ATS-1R Helmet Review

My experience with the 6D ATS-1R started at WSBK weekend at Laguna Seca where I bumped into Bob Weber, who I worked with 20 years ago at Petersen Publishing. Since then he’s gone on to become one of the cofounders and the CEO of 6D Helmets. Bob asked me if I’d seen the latest version to the ATS-1, and I sheepishly admitted that I didn’t know it had been updated. I knew that Tom Roderick had really liked the original 6D ATS-1 back in 2016 when he tested it, but that was all I knew.

MO Tested: REV'IT! Dominator GTX Gloves Review

Choosing to use the Dominator GTX gloves during a 1600+ mile tour throughout England was one of the better decisions I’ve made recently. They kept me dry through the bipolar Welsh weather and, with the help of the Scrambler 1200’s heated grips, they kept my hands cozy into the low 40s at night. I’m also confident that they would do an excellent job of protecting my paws should things go south.

MO Tested: Evotech-Performance Accessories

I first learned about Evotech-Performance products when I was searching for a radiator guard in my first installment of KTM 790 Duke upgrades. Alpinestars Missile Ignition Suit Review

Full disclosure before we begin: I’m a former Alpinestars employee. But don’t take that to mean I’m a fan of all its products. There are definitely some duds. A perplexing one was the first-generation Missile Tech-Air suit. At a thousand bucks, it was a novel idea as a relatively affordable entry-level airbag-compatible suit. The thing going against it was fit (at least for me) – I didn’t like the fit at all. At 5-foot, 8-inches, 150 pounds, with a 30-inch inseam and 31-inch waist, I’m about as average as they come in regards to body size and type. Still, the Missile was uncomfortable. The proportions were wrong and it was tight in the hips and knees, making it difficult to move my lower body the way I wanted.

MO Testing: WPS Firepower Featherweight Lithium Battery

Well, the old Shorai LFX battery lasted nine years in my carbureted 2000 Yamaha R1, so if this one does that well, I’ll be happy. When we got the Shorai in 2010, lightweight lithium batteries were a new and exciting technology to fear and loathe, and Shorai was one of the only players. Today, there are many more lithiums on the field, so I did what most people do: I looked for the cheapest lithium battery that didn’t have terrible reviews.

Best Motorcycle LED Turn Signals

Most motorcycle manufacturers don’t seem to put much consideration into the design of their turn signals, and many of the ones who do aren’t allowed to use them on their US models; thankfully the aftermarket has both problems covered. Available in a series of designs, aftermarket signals can be sleek for streetfighters, classic for cruisers, or even discreet for sportbikes. Now, with the proliferation of LEDs, signals can be incredibly slim and incredibly bright. All with little draw on the electrical system. Here we’ve collected a small sampling of LED signals for nearly every kind of motorcycle.

MO Tested: Rizoma Gas Cap, Mirrors, Pegs, And Turn Signals

As I’ve progressed my way through this 790 Duke project, I’ve mostly concentrated on parts that improve the KTM’s function or provide some sort of protection. Since I’m typically a function over form kinda guy, this is to be expected. However, there are some features of the Duke that, despite their utility, I thought needed replacing. For example, the stock mirrors, while performing their intended job quite well, broke up the angular lines of the bike and looked like rubber flippers mounted on the handlebar. And don’t get me started on the stock turn signals!

MO Tested: Sidi Arcadia Tex Boots

All these beautiful new motorcycles hanging around my house all the time, combined with the need to look presentable when riding them, have infected me with another disease: I’ve developed a shoe fetish. When our friends at Motonation offered up a pair of new Sidis a while ago, I was smitten by the new Arcadia Tex on their website. In contrast to Sidi’s excellent high-tech racing boots (both road and offroad), these are a “Sidi Design Series” boot, intended for more casual riding and off-bike profiling. Fine by me; I’m not racing most of the time I’m riding. And when I’m stopping for a donut or a fish taco, it’s a known fact that 87% of women and 13% of men notice shoes first when scoping out a member of the opposite sex. It feels good to look good.

Best Off-Road Gas Tanks

The allure of off-road riding for many is simply the ability to go further. To explore the unknown. To get as far as possible from our daily grind and the hustle and bustle of life. But to get out there, and more importantly to be able to get back, it’s not often an OEM fuel tank is going to deliver the kind of range we moto-Magellans are looking for. This is yet another area where we can turn to the aftermarket to fill our needs. From larger fuel tanks to auxiliary canisters and bottles, there are plenty of ways to ensure you’ll have enough fuel to explore further and make it back to camp at the end of the day. Here’s MO’s list of the best off-road gas tanks.

MO Tested: Pirelli Supercorsa TD Review

If you’re like me, you love ripping around at trackdays, going as fast as you want without the fear of cops or opposing traffic waiting to ruin your day. That feeling you get when you know your tires are nice and hot and can do no wrong is simply magical and adds to the allure of motorcycling you simply can’t explain to your non-riding buddies. But if you’re also like me, then you’re lazy and too much of a cheapskate to bother buying tire warmers and a generator to operate them. So what’s one to do if excellent grip is the goal, but putting those pigs in a blanket just ain’t gonna happen?

Best Sportbike Exhausts

The reality is that the first thing many people do when they buy a sportbike is to change the exhaust. While it’s getting harder and harder to do this legally (many exhausts will say “For off-road use only”) that hasn’t stopped folks from pulling off the stock, quiet pipes and replacing them with lighter, louder pieces. From a performance standpoint, replacing an exhaust makes sense; lighter is better when it comes to sportbikes, and who doesn’t like a little improvement in power?

MO Tested: KTM PowerParts Wave Brake Discs

If I was happy with how EBC brake pads improved the KTM 790 Duke’s binders, why would I install the PowerParts Wave Discs? First, I was curious if the discs really would deliver KTM’s claimed 25% increase in braking power, and after our recent trip to Laguna Seca, where I found myself coming into the corners at increasingly higher speeds and requiring more and more from my brakes throughout the day, I realized that perhaps more power at the lever would be a good thing. So, I decided to check out the waves, front and rear.

MO Tested: Factory Pro Shift Kit Review

KTM released the 790 Duke as a 2019 model in the U.S., but it was available to much of the rest of the world for a year longer. In that time, reports of shifting issues have circulated among Duke owners. While some riders report false neutrals between the higher gears, others have said that, although the quickshifter cuts the ignition, the shift occasionally doesn’t happen. Factory Pro has seen this before, calling the issue lazy shifting, and has created a kit to almost completely resolve the matter on a wide variety of motorcycles, including the 790 Duke. However, to understand what makes this kit special, we first need to discuss how a motorcycle changes gears.

Best Motorcycle Hard Bags

While there’s something to be said about the convenience and cost-effectiveness of being able to toss a set of soft luggage on your motorcycle when you need it, the time comes when you realize that what you really need is a set of hard bags. Since they are bolted or locked to your motorcycle, they are significantly more secure from theft. Then there’s the weatherproofness that can’t be matched by soft luggage. If you’ve done any extensive touring on your motorcycle, you’ve most likely encountered the disappointment of opening your soft luggage to find that you didn’t have it securely closed before that last rain storm, and now, you’ve got to find a laundromat to dry all your clothes.

MO Tested: INNOVV K2 Motorcycle Camera System Review

When we were given the opportunity to test the new INNOVV K2 Motorcycle Camera System, I immediately thought of my friend. Not long ago, he had been involved in a traffic accident that had left his bike totaled after a collision with a car in an intersection. Rider okay, bike, not so much. If he had a camera running to record the situation, he may not have gotten burned so bad on the outcome of his incident. I asked Evans if we could set up my friend with the camera and get his notes on installation and use of the product. He rides quite a bit and commutes by motorcycle nearly every day to and from work. My thought was since my commute is from my bedroom to my home office with a possible detour to the kitchen along the way, my friend could gather more real-world data much quicker than I would be able to.

Sure, I spend several hours a week carving up the local canyon roads of Southern California near my home, but this is more a means to stay sane. Routine therapy. I also usually take a motorbike to run errands around the city, but to be fair, soaring through swarms of Los Angeles traffic can sometimes feel like you’re flying a military sortie over a battlefield that’s full of soldiers who have forgotten what they’re fighting for, no longer care about the cause, and just want to make it home alive.

Riding Skills Book Buyer's Guide

On the other hand, I had to wade through a bunch of vidiots before I got to the good information, and there’s the rub. Even with all the new wonderbikes, the skills and mindset one needs to properly operate a motorcycle in a self-preserving fashion haven’t changed since the print era, and these books are the gold standard. Also, I think you internalize things when you’re relaxed in your comfy reading spot much better than you do on your iPhone bouncing along in back of an Uber, no? MO Tested: Icon 1000 Truant 2 Riding Boot Review

Finding boots that are specific to a riding style is easy, regardless of whether you’re a trail rider on a big GS or a sportbike rider clipping apexes on the Panigale V4. That said, once you get into more casual boots, things can get murky. Enter the Icon 1000 Truant 2 – a casual boot/moccasin/high top sneaker hybrid that (at least on paper) ticks a lot of boxes. For many (myself included), there’s value in a pair of boots that don’t look like conventional riding boots, especially for those days where you’re out running errands. The challenge is that most brands are so ride-focused that they don’t always consider walking/standing comfort, and a quick skim of user reviews will tell you that not all of the big gear brands have figured out what it takes to play in the category.

MO Tested: Bridgestone Battlax Hypersport S22 Review

Why introduce a new street tire to the motorcycle press on a race track? It’s a fair question with a relatively simple answer. Sporting rubber – even that designed for the street – has evolved so much in the past decade that exploring their limits can only be safely approached in a closed course environment. The designers clearly felt this way about the Bridgestone Battlax Hypersport S22 tire when they flew journos from around the world to the legendary Circuito de Jerez in Spain to see what this new rubber was capable of doing. That was their story at least, and we’re down with it.

MO Tested: Spidi Carbo 4 Glove Review

About the time I received the Spidi Carbo Rider jacket, the Spidi Carbo 4 glove arrived with it and boy, do they look good together. A match made in Ukraine and China respectively (with both designed in Italy, of course). Ya know, I’ve noticed that glove preference can be quite polarizing. Some folks swear by gauntlet gloves, for daily wear or in inclement weather, they pull those gauntlets on with pride to show their superiority over short cuff glove wearing fools everywhere. Others can’t really stand gauntlets, which until more recently, was my MO (hehe, see what I did there). Of course, I would wear them at the racetrack, but just about any other time, I preferred short cuff gloves. I’ve tried all sorts of weather resistant gloves too; Gore-Tex, short, long, etc. Some have done their job and some haven’t despite being gauntlet or short-cuffed. Around town, you’ll usually see me in short-cuffed mits. The Spidi Carbo 4 is the first gauntlet glove I’ve liked enough to use without a race suit on.

The Spidi Carbo Rider is an excellent example of an aggressive sport jacket that can be worn for daily use.
