What Harley announced… and what it didn’t

I didn’t get much of a chance to experience all that the standard Harley Street Glide had to offer at the launch of it back in February because Mother Nature decided to rear its ugly head and cut our ride short. Other than feeling very comfortable with the ergonomics and satisfied with the torque from the Milwaukee-Eight 117ci V-Twin, I left the event feeling a bit unsatisfied.

Recently, the Motorcycle.com staff had the chance to tour the beautiful Ontario countryside to experience the fall colors and to get a taste of what Northern Ontario has to offer. It’s been a while since I walked out of work into a dark winter evening and scraped frost off of my motorcycle seat before hopping on to brave the elements. Longer still, that I did it every night during college in the Midwest where my enthusiasm and devil-may-care attitude outweighed the fear of potential black ice lurking in the shadows. Not long after that time, I moved to California with its promise of year-round riding in the sunshine with mountains I could visit within a day to get my fix of snow if/when needed. It’s been great. I do miss the seasonality though. The moist smell of dirt and decay that you only get a few times a year on unseasonably warm fall days as the leaves begin to change color and litter the forest floor before drying to a crisp in the winter wind. I miss the silent mornings when an overnight snow storm left the landscape blanketed in a sound dampening layer of ice. I miss change.

Brad Richards has a tough task. What do you do when you’re tasked with designing a ground-up revamp of your company’s most successful and coveted models? Two motorcycles that have etched themselves into the history books largely because of the way they look? The answer, as it always has been, boils down to three words: Refinement. Refinement. Refinement.

Harley-Davidson announced the new 2024 Road Glide and Street Glide, updating the baggers with features that debuted on the 2023 CVO models. The Street Glide and Road Glide will only be offered in the standard and CVO versions, with no Specials for 2024.

With the exception of the Road Glide Limited, none of the other Road Glide and Street Glide variants have been confirmed as yet. Considering the significant updates to the 2023 CVO Road Glide and CVO Street Glide (which earned them the runner-up nod for our Motorcycle of the Year MOBOs), it’s a no-brainer to expect some of those changes to trickle down to the non-CVO models. Indeed, Harley-Davidson released a teaser image for its Jan. 24 announcement, showing three models and the tagline “The Dawn of a New Era”. Two of the models are equipped with the new Road Glide and Street Glide fairings with the integrated lighting. The image of the Road Glide has relatively basic-looking mirrors compared to the CVO Road Glide, so very likely the teaser shows the non-CVO Street Glide and Road Glide.

It’s been yet another fantastic year in motorcycling. But, of course, isn’t motorcycling always fantastic? Each year we see varying levels of innovation from BNGs (bold new graphics) to evolutions, and inevitably entirely new machines gracing the motorcycle market. As enthusiasts, we are in a golden era of motorcycling, rife for choices backed with technology that makes it so much easier to own and ride.

A couple of days ago, we were tipped off by Harley-Davidson blogger Dr. Dan Morel about photos of an alleged new CVO Road Glide and CVO Street Glide taken from the factory floor. Morel has since sent us another photo, offering a clear look at the CVO Road Glide’s right side, including evidence that the new 121ci engine uses variable valve timing.

Taking inspiration from its championship-winning King of the Baggers factory race bikes, Harley-Davidson introduces new, performance-focused ST versions of the Road Glide and Street Glide.

Today, Harley-Davidson announced its first batch of 2022 motorcycles, with models already arriving at dealerships across the U.S. These models return mostly unchanged from 2021, save for updated colors and, for some, new wheel designs. If you’re looking for any new models, CVO models, or motorcycles getting more significant changes, you’ll have to wait until Jan. 26, for Harley-Davidson’s “Further, Faster” world premiere event.

Harley-Davidson announced its returning touring lineup for 2021, with updated paint options and small updates to the three Special models. As we expected, all of the 2020 model are returning in the face of Harley-Davidson’s plans to streamline its product portfolio. That means the 2021 lineup consists of the Electra Glide Standard, Road Glide Limited, Road Glide Special, Road King, Road King Special, Street Glide, Street Glide Special, and Ultra Limited.
